Warum Feuerwerk heute mehr kostet als viele denken

Why fireworks cost more today than many think

Those who buy fireworks today often notice that certain products have become more expensive than a few years ago. Longtime fireworks fans especially remember batteries, rockets, or volcanoes that used to be much cheaper. But what is the reason for this?

The short answer would simply be: Everything has become more expensive.
The real answer, however, is much more complex.

Fireworks are not a normal product

Many products can be produced, stored, and shipped relatively easily. With fireworks, it’s different. Even before an item hits the market, there is enormous logistical and organizational effort behind it.

Fireworks are classified as hazardous materials. This means:

  • special transport regulations
  • stricter storage conditions
  • safety distances
  • permits
  • trained procedures
  • more complex planning

A firework item does not simply travel around the world in a normal package.

Transport has changed massively

A large part of fireworks comes from China. Especially during and after the Corona period, international transport has changed significantly. Container prices have sometimes exploded, routes have become less reliable, and hazardous material transport is harder to plan.

Especially with fireworks, not every shipping company or transport provider wants to handle hazardous materials. This leads to additional restrictions and higher costs.

And when a container arrives late, it often directly affects the season. Fireworks is a seasonal business. What arrives too late may only be sold months later.

Quality has its price

Many people compare fireworks only by size or number of shots. But there are often huge differences between cheap and high-quality products.

For example in:

  • Effect intensity
  • Stability
  • Craftsmanship
  • Reliability
  • Safety margins
  • Effect composition
  • Burn time
  • Color quality

Especially high-quality Swiss or European-coordinated products often rely on more precise manufacturing and better effect combinations. You might not see this immediately on the packaging, but often clearly in the sky.

There’s more behind a fireworks business than just sales

Many underestimate how much work goes into a fireworks season. A large part of it is hardly visible to customers.

These include, among others:

  • Safety inspections
  • Warehouse organization
  • Product data entry
  • Translations
  • Product photography
  • Online shop maintenance
  • legal labeling
  • Consulting
  • seasonal planning
  • Training
  • Setting up sales areas

Especially smaller specialty stores often invest a huge amount of time to ensure products can be offered safely, correctly, and understandably.

Why certain products disappear

Another point is that some items are no longer produced today or are only available in small quantities.

The reasons for this are varied:

  • rising production costs
  • new regulations
  • changed demand
  • more difficult raw material sourcing
  • higher transportation costs
  • low profitability of individual products

As a result, the product range changes constantly over the years.

Fireworks remain an emotional product

Despite all changes, fireworks remain something special for many people. It’s not just about the bang and effects, but often about memories, traditions, and shared moments.

Maybe that’s exactly why fireworks still hold such a strong fascination today. Behind every item lies much more effort, planning, and experience than you might guess at first glance.

And maybe next time you watch fireworks, you’ll not only look at the price but also at everything behind it.
